Wet-weather activities for kids on the Fraser Coast
Rain does not have to cancel the day. Start with the kind of weather you are dealing with. Light showers may suit a mostly sheltered attraction, while persistent rain calls for somewhere fully indoors.
During severe weather, the safest option may be to stay close to home. Always follow current warnings and avoid beaches, piers, floodwater, creeks and exposed foreshore areas during lightning, strong winds or heavy rain.
Free and low-cost ideas
Fraser Coast Libraries
Location: Hervey Bay, Maryborough, Burrum Heads, Howard and Tiaro
Best for: Books, children’s spaces and free family programs
A library visit can fill a short morning without requiring a complicated plan. Browse together, choose a family read-aloud, use the children’s spaces or check the current program for storytimes, creative sessions and school-holiday activities.
The new Hervey Bay Library is located at 23 Main Street, Pialba. Library members can also access digital books, audiobooks, magazines and children’s resources from home.
Good to know: Programs, opening hours and age limits vary between branches. Some activities require registration, but families can visit and browse without attending a scheduled program.
Hervey Bay Regional Gallery
Location: 166 Old Maryborough Road, Pialba
Best for: A calm, free indoor outing with a creative element
Entry to the gallery is free and exhibitions change throughout the year. The Scribbly-Doodah Kids creative zone in the foyer provides free family art-making activities when available.
This works particularly well as a shorter outing rather than an entire day, especially with younger children.
Good to know: Check the current exhibitions and opening hours before visiting. Gallery spaces require close supervision, and some exhibitions may appeal more to older children than toddlers.
Gatakers Artspace
Location: 311 Kent Street, Maryborough
Best for: Free exhibitions in a compact heritage setting
Gatakers Artspace is a useful Maryborough option when families want a short indoor cultural stop. Entry is free and the exhibitions change regularly, so repeat visits can offer something different.
Children may enjoy choosing a favourite artwork, looking for particular colours or materials, or sketching something they see.
Good to know: Gatakers is generally open Tuesday to Sunday, with shorter weekend hours. Check current exhibitions and opening times before travelling.
Paid wet-weather favourites
Timezone Hervey Bay
Location: Stockland Hervey Bay, 6 Central Avenue
Best for: Arcade games, laser tag, older children and teens
Timezone offers more than 80 arcade and prize games, virtual-reality experiences and an indoor laser-tag arena. Families can choose how long they stay and how much they load onto a Powercard, making it suitable for either a quick activity or a longer visit.
Its shopping-centre location also provides easy parking, toilets and nearby food options.
Good to know: Costs can increase quickly when several children are playing. Decide on a budget before arriving and check the current laser-tag availability and suitability for younger children.
Maryborough Ten Pin
Location: Lot 2 Quarry Court, Maryborough
Best for: An active indoor outing for children, teens and adults
Maryborough Ten Pin offers family ten-pin bowling alongside more than 20 arcade machines. Bowling prices include shoe hire, and families can choose one or two games depending on their children’s ages and attention spans.
It is one of the Fraser Coast’s more substantial fully indoor activities and can work for mixed-age families, groups of friends or a parent-versus-kids challenge.
Good to know: Opening hours vary across the week and can change. Contact the centre about bookings, lane availability and any equipment needed for younger children. Set an arcade budget before arriving if the children are likely to want games as well as bowling.
BIGSCREEN Cinemas
Location: 128 Boat Harbour Drive, Pialba
Best for: Current family movies and predictable all-weather entertainment
A movie is useful when the rain is persistent and everyone needs an easy plan. BIGSCREEN has seven cinemas and screens current releases throughout the week.
Selected Mums & Bubs sessions use lower sound, dim lighting and subtitles, with space for prams and movement. Sensory Safe sessions are also offered at selected times.
Good to know: Check the film classification, running time and session type before booking. Mums & Bubs and Sensory Safe conditions do not apply to every screening.
Hervey Bay Boat Club Cinema
Location: Buccaneer Drive, Urangan Marina
Best for: An affordable smaller cinema outing with food nearby
The Boat Club operates two cinemas showing current releases. Families can combine a movie with a meal, and selected café food can be taken into the cinema in suitable containers.
You do not need to be a Boat Club member to attend the cinema.
Good to know: Everyone under 18 must be accompanied by a parent, step-parent or legal guardian, including inside the cinema. Seating is general admission, so arrive early if sitting together is important.
The Story Bank
Location: 331 Kent Street, Maryborough
Best for: Storytelling, imagination and a Maryborough heritage experience
The Story Bank is a ticketed museum inside the birthplace of Mary Poppins author P. L. Travers. The experience combines storytelling, imaginative displays and local history.
It works particularly well for primary-school-aged children who enjoy books, characters and exploring detailed displays.
Good to know: Admission fees and opening days apply. Check whether the experience is likely to suit your children’s ages and attention spans before making a special trip.
Maryborough Military and Colonial Museum
Location: 106 Wharf Street, Maryborough
Best for: School-aged children and teens interested in history, vehicles and military objects
The museum contains thousands of military and colonial items, including medals, uniforms, scale models, vehicles and displays covering different periods of Australian history.
It can provide a substantial indoor outing for older children who enjoy detailed collections and historical stories.
Good to know: The subject matter may not engage every younger child. The museum occupies three levels, but only the ground floor is wheelchair accessible. Admission fees and opening hours apply.
Paid options for light rain
The following places can still work in ordinary wet weather, but they are not completely enclosed indoor attractions. Choose somewhere else during severe storms, lightning, strong winds or dangerous driving conditions.
Hervey Bay and Maryborough Aquatic Centres
Locations: 202–204 Boundary Road, Torquay, and corner of John and Kent Streets, Maryborough
Best for: Swimming during light rain when the pools remain open
Both aquatic centres offer casual family entry and heated pools.
Hervey Bay has an undercover heated 25-metre pool, along with outdoor pools, a lagoon, splash pad and activity tower. Maryborough has heated pools, a children’s play area and an indoor program pool with restricted public access.
Good to know: These are paid facilities and should not be treated as completely indoor family attractions. The indoor program pools are primarily used for lessons, rehabilitation and scheduled activities rather than general recreational play.
Outdoor play areas, inflatables and some pools may close during storms or high winds. Check the current pool allocation, opening hours and weather conditions before visiting.
Reefworld Aquarium
Location: Dayman Park, Urangan
Best for: Marine life, feeding sessions and a hands-on aquarium experience during ordinary rainy weather
Reefworld is a natural aquarium featuring turtles, reef fish and other marine life. Admission includes the opportunity to watch scheduled animal feeds, and visitors may be able to participate in selected feeding and touch-tank experiences.
Tickets allow visitors to leave and return during the same day, which can be useful when planning around younger children.
Good to know: Reefworld uses natural light and is located directly on the foreshore. It is weather-sheltered rather than a completely sealed modern aquarium, so choose another activity during severe storms, strong winds or dangerous driving conditions. Confirm opening and feeding times before travelling.
When staying home is the safer option
If severe weather warnings are current, roads are affected or thunder and lightning are nearby, postpone the outing.
Fraser Coast Libraries provide digital books, audiobooks and children’s resources that members can access from home. Other easy backups include an indoor picnic, family movie, baking project, cardboard construction challenge or a scavenger hunt using things already around the house.
Before you go
Opening hours, prices, programs and access arrangements can change. Check directly with the venue before travelling, particularly during school holidays, public holidays and severe weather.
Consider:
whether the activity is fully indoors or only weather-sheltered
whether bookings are required
the suitable ages and likely length of the visit
noise, lighting and sensory needs
pram and wheelchair access
the total cost for your family
current road and weather conditions
